DescriptionOval half-length portrait of a young woman, facing right, holding a child in her lap. She wears a long-sleeved dress or robe and a striped shawl trimmed with fringe. A bracelet is on her right wrist. A scarf is draped over her head. The child wears a sleeved nightshirt or undershirt. A turned wooden object, possibly a spindle, is in the left foreground. The rectangular border consists of flowers and leaves, with roses in the corners.
NotesSource Note: The print is based on the Madonna della Sedia by Raphael. The original painting is in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence; the Kelloggs would have known the composition from an engraved reproduction. (Finlay 2/3/2004)
