DescriptionFour men are at work in a shoemaker's shop. The three men at the left wear shirts with the sleeves rolled up, trousers, slippers, and aprons. Two men wear caps. One man has a beard and mustache. All three are seated on cobbler's benches, which have compartments at one end containing tools and nails and a drawer beneath. The man at the far left uses a hammer to pound a sole. The next man is using an awl to make holes in the sole of a boot. The third man, seen from the back, is holding thread between his hands. The fourth man, at the far right, is seated in a straight chair. He wears a shirt, jacket, trousers, shoes, and eyeglasses. A handkerchief protrudes from his pocket. He appears to be cutting a piece of leather on a board held in his lap. Pieces of leather, lasts, tools, and partially completed boots are on the floor. A bucket and a dish of water are in the foreground. Completed shoes and boots are displayed in a shop window. A curtain is drawn back at the left. A small mirror hangs nearby. A coil of cord or string hangs from a hook on the right. Additional tools, lasts, and patterns hang from racks on the walls. A bird in a birdcage and a shelf clock are on the wall on the right. Two jugs with corks in them are on a shelf overhead. A newspaper, a bowl with a spoon in it, and tools are on a small table in the right background.
