DescriptionA man with long hair, a beard, and a mustache is seated at the right. He is barefoot and wears flowing robes. Three small boys wearing tunics gather around him. One is kneeling with outstretched hands. Another stands leaning on the man's right knee. Another leans on his left knee. The man's left hand is on his back. The man stretches out his right hand towards a fourth child who approaches from the left. His hands cover his eyes, and he appears to be crying. The floor or pavement appears to be composed of large blocks of dressed stone.
Object number1978.19.29
NotesSource Note: The composition is dervied from a work by Charles Ingham, which Kellogg probably knew through an engraving by Peter Maverick. Two impressions of the engraving are in the CHS Graphics Collection. One of these impressions bears the imprint "Published by Willis... Ct. 1832." Despite tears, this may be deciphered as "Published by Willis Thrall, Hartford, Ct. 1832." (Finlay 8/17/04)
