DescriptionA man wearing a coat, hat, and trousers stands in front of a frame building, apparently a tavern. He holds a stick in his left hand, apparently an ox goad. Two oxen drawing a cart or wagon loaded with hay drink from a wooden water trough nearby. A second man, presumably the proprietor of the shop, offers a glass to the young farmer. He points to the interior of his taproom, where another man stands drinking. A bartender stands behind the bar. Bottles are on a shelf, with spindles above. Another man is leaning on what appears to be a pitchfork. A sign above the door reads: "LICENSED TO RETAIL / SPIRITS". A hanging tavern sign, with a bunch of grapes, read: "ENTERTAINMENT / FOR MAN & BEAST." A man, presumably drunk, sprawls on a bench at the foot of the sign. Another man is slumped on a bench at the far left. What appears to be a broken hoe is in the street beside him. A hen and chicks are beside a well at the far right. A bucket is suspended from a rope, apparently attached to a branch of a large tree. Barrels are piled outside a building in the right background, with a sign that reads: "DISTILLERY". Hills, fields, rail fences, a board fence, and a stone wall are also in the background.
