DescriptionA large assortment of vignettes are arranged in rows within an ornamental border. Large images include the Connecticut State Capitol, an angel with a shield that reads "PROTECTION" flying over a factory and sailing ships, an eagle on a globe with a banner that reads: "WORLD MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE CO.", and the Charter Oak. Other vignettes include a building under construction; office buildings; commercial buildings; factories, including the Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company; portraits of Daniel Webster and Queen Victoria; allegorial figures; animals, including horses, deer, a pelican, and a Newfoundland dog; historical events, including the landing of the Pilgrims; railroad trains; the Connecticut State Seal; Mount Etna from Taormina (presumably based on the Thomas Cole painting in the Wadsworth Atheneum); and a horse-drawn fire engine.
NotesMedium Note: Some of the images originated as steel engravings; these were probably transferred to the lithographic stone and printed as transfer lithographs. (Finlay 6/4/2004)

Source Note: Many of the images are based on bank note engravings. These sources (including in most cases the artists responsible for the original designs) could be identified by consulting resources in the Print Department at the New York Public Library. (Finlay 6/4/2004)
