DescriptionThe buildings of a seaport town line the harbor in the background. Most buildings appear to be houses or warehouses, but at least three churches are visible, one with a classical portico and a square tower with a clock in it, one with a cross on a square tower, and one with a tall steeple. A three-masted ship is on the ways at the left. An arched bridge leads across a stream or inlet at the right. A frame building at the far right, partially hidden by a tree, is an inn or tavern and has a hanging sign in front of it. A windmill is visible behind the sign. A rail fence leads down a grassy slope into the water. There appears to be a small pool of water in the grassy field in the right foreground. Numerous boats and sailing vessels are in the harbor. Some are docked at a long wharf. One vessel is careened on its side. A ship and a small sloop are under sail at the left, with a small sidewheel steamboat flying an American flag between them.

NotesDate Note: According to Stephen Longmire, this print must be later than 1836, since the prominent church on the hill was erected in that year. It must be earlier than 1842, since it does not include the Whalers' Church, which was erected then. However, if the accession date of 1840 is correct, it cannot be later than that. This suggests a date of 1836-1840. (Finlay 8/16/2005)
