DescriptionWithin a tent, a man in military uniform kneels on one knee in front of a writing table covered with a table cloth. He wears a coat with epaulets, breeches buttoned below the knee, and high leather boots. The lace frill of a shirt is visible at his throat; lace cuffs protrude below the sleeves of the uniform jacket. The man's left hand rests on a thick book with words "HOLY / BIBLE" on the spine. Also on the table are a map, an inkwell with a quill pen in it, and a tricorne hat. The man kneels on a rug with a fringed border. On the ground beside him are his sword and scabbard and a telescope. A folding stool is in the left background.
