DescriptionA small child, probably a boy, is seated on the back of a large Newfoundland dog. The child wears a dress with a wide neckline and short sleeves over pantalets. A hat with two plumes is on his head. A sash is tied diagonally across his right shoulder. A scabbard hangs from a belt around his waist. He holds a sword in his right hand, and a leather strap attached to the dog's collar in his left hand. The dog stands in an open area with plants in the left and right foreground. A house or barn with a picket fence and large trees is in the left background. A church steeple is visible above the trees to the right. In the right background, a man and a dog cross a rustic bridge over a broad stream. A rustic fence lines the road or path that leads into the woods at the far right.
