DescriptionA small white girl kneels beside an African-American man who is seated on the ground. She wears a dress with a wide neckline trimmed with ruffles, pantalets, and high shoes. He wears a striped shirt, striped pants, a jacket, and shoes. His left hand rests on a book. A broad-brimmed straw hat is beside him. The girl is arranging a garland of leaves and flowers, including roses, around the man's neck. Plants, including what appear to be banana plants, grow at the left and right. Reeds or grass grow beside a stream or pond in the foreground. A man stands on the balcony of a house in the background. A woman stands beside and slightly below him. The house has an awning and a porch at the left with vines growing on it. An ornamental urn on a pedestal is at the far left.
