DescriptionA man wearing a military uniform consisting of a jacket with epaulets, breeches, hose, and shoes with buckles, is seated on a sofa covered with a large sheet of cloth. Part of this drapery spills off the sofa onto the floor beneath the man's feet. The man holds a large paperbound book in his left hand and turns the pages with his right hand. A small child, presumably a boy, lies on the right, his head and arms resting on the man's left thigh. He wears a dress over pantalets. In the right background, bookcases filled with books completely cover the walls. Additional books and rolls of paper, probably maps or charts, rest on a shelf in the corner. A cocked hat is nearby. A tall pendulum clock is at the far left. A harbor scene is painted on the top of the clock case. A candelabra with a shade is below, apparently on a table with a fringed tablecloth. A carpet with a bold pattern is on the floor. Scattered on the carpet are folded papers, possibly newspapers, and toys, including marbles, skittles, and a ball or globe.
