DescriptionTwo men carry the dead body of a third man towards a cave in a rocky cliff at the far right. Both men wear tunics and sandals. The man at the right also wears a cloak and a turban. He has a beard. The dead man has a beard and mustache and is clad only in a loincloth. Two stone steps lead to the entrance of the cave. Two men with halos look on from the right background. A young woman with a halo rushes forward and touches the dead man's right shoulder. A woman wearing a dress and veil collapses in the arms of a third woman. Both have halos above their heads. Three crosses are on a hill in the left background. A ladder leans against the middle cross. Small figures stand nearby.
NotesSource Note: The visual source for this print is Raphael's 1507 Entombment, in the Galleria Borghese in Rome. The composition is reversed; since Kellogg prints are usually oriented in the same way as their models, this may reflect the orientation of the intermediate source, presumably a reproductive engraving.
