DescriptionA family, consisting of a man, woman, two boys, and a young child, are gathered around an oval table. The woman, seated at the left, wears a dark dress with a white collar. A small brooch is pinned at ther throat. Her feet rest on a small upholstered footstool. Her right arm is around a young child who stands beside her, holding her left hand in his right hand. He wears a smock, pantalets, and striped socks. The man is seated in an armchair at the right. He has a beard and is wearing a coat, pants, shirt and necktie, and eyeglasses. He is looking at a large open book that he holds in his lap. A small boy stands beside him, also looking at the book. An older boy is seated behind the table with his right hand resting on a book. Two other books and a bouquet of flowers are on the table. A landscape painting in a gilt frame hangs on the wall in the right background. A window with fringed drapery is in the left background. A toy cannon is in the left foreground. A fluted column on a tall base is in the right foreground. Fringed drapery is attached to the column with a cord.
