A small pile of cannonballs lies near the wheel of the cannon carriage. Mexican cavalry charge from the right. A wounded man lies in the right foreground. A wounded horse is at the far right, and another wounded soldier staggers towards the right. An additional cannon and crew and infantry troops are in the background, partially obscurred by cannon smoke. The walls of fortified city are in the right background. Mexican flags fly from the battlements. Buildings, including a church, are visible beyond the city wall.
