DescriptionA small town is on a low hill in the middle distance. In the foreground, in a field surrounded by a stone wall, three men load hay into a wagon drawn by oxen. Small piles of hay are arranged in regular rows at the right. Trees, possibly fruit trees, line the enclosure; a farmhouse and its outbuildings are in the right back corner. A rail fence separates the farmyard from the field. Buildings in the town include many additional houses, a barn, and a large church with a domed tower. A tall tavern or inn sign is visible in the right background, behind a tall elm tree. Other trees appear to be poplars. Additional fields and low wooded hills are in the distance.
