DescriptionComplex of industrial buildings includes several factories with smoke issuing from smokestacks. A ventilator and several chimneys are on the roofs. Signs read: "L.B. Hanks & Co." "Hartford / Iron Foundry." A man loads or unloads a horse-drawn wagon near a gate. A man holding a whip and a woman holding a parasol are in a horse-drawn carriage. A dog runs beside them. Two boys, one rolling a hoop, are at the far left. A picket fence is at the right. Pennants fly from the masts of sailing vessels that are out of sight on the Connecticut River in the background. Birds fly in the sky.
NotesArtist Note: The inscription "E.W. Clay Del. & Fec." suggests that Clay both made the original drawing on which the lithograph is based, and transferred his own design to the stone. (Finlay 6/15/2004)
