DescriptionFamily register is enclosed in a monument or shrine, with allegorical figures on high bases at the left and right. Paired, fluted Ionic columns support an arched superstructure, enclosing a bird with outstretched wings, apparently an eagle, which appears to be feeding its young with blood from its own breast, in the manner supposedly typical of the pelican. Bird and young are in a nest. The woman on the base at the left holds an infant and gestures towards a cornucopia and two doves at her feet. The woman on the base at the right is leaning on an anchor. A globe and a pile of three books are at her feet. She gestures towards the register. Both women wear classical dress.
NotesSubject Note: The allegorical figure on the left appears to represent both the cardinal virtue of Charity or Love; the figure on the right appears to represent Hope. (Finlay 6/9/2004)
