DescriptionAn elderly man is seated in an upholstered armchair at the right. He wears eyeglasses, a shirt, vest, breeches, hose, and shoes. An open book rests in his lap. He appears to be asleep. At the left, three small boys play with a pendulum clock. One boy is kneeling on the floor, holding up another boy who hangs onto one of the cords beneath the clock. A third boy is kneeling on a stool in a doorway at the far left. Two additional books lie on the floor. The book at the left is open to an alphabet. A wicker basket hangs from a nail at the upper right. The walls of the room are brick, the floor is stone.
