DescriptionAn old man is seated inside a large wooden tub. He wears a shirt or smock, short pants or breeches, stockings, shoes, an apron, and a cap. He has long white hair. A young man and a young woman stand behind the tub, out of sight. The woman wears a short skirt, blouse, apron, and cap. She has a plaid shawl tied around her shoulders. The young man wears a cap, a vest, a shirt, and an apron. His lower body is hidden behind the tub. His right arm is around the woman's neck, and they are holding hands and laughing or smiling. His left arm hangs over the front of the tub, and the old man holds it to his lips with his left hand. A mallet and wood shavings lie on the stone floor beside the tub. A partially completed tub and a bucket are in the left foreground with some staves nearby. Hoops hang from the wall above. Additional tools hang from the wall in the background near a large barrel. At the right, a jug, a bowl, and a two-handled saw or plane rest on another barrel. A jacket and what appears to be a peel hang on the wall near a window. A large tree stump, a wooden bench, and a barrel hoop are in the left foreground. A door in the left background appears to open into a courtyard where additional barrels are beneath a colonnade.
