DescriptionA man and a woman are seated at a table in the interior of a room. The man, seated at the left, wears a military uniform consisting of a coat, vest, breeches, and boots. His hair or wig is tied in a queue. His left hand rests on the table, and his legs are crossed. A sword, a hat with a rosette, an open book, and a very large sheet of paper are on the table, which is covered with a tablecloth. The man's right arm rests on the shoulder of a small boy standing beside him. The boy wears a jacket, a vest, a shirt with a broad collar trimmed with lace or ruching, and breeches. He holds a book in his left hand. His right hand rests on a large globe in a stand. The woman wears a dress trimmed with ruching and a cap with a bow. Her skirt is open in front to reveal an underskirt or petticoat. She holds what appears to be a fan in her right hand and uses it to point to something on the sheet of paper. A girl stands behind her with both hands on the table. She wears a dress with sleeves with two puffs, and a sash. Large patterned wallpaper is on the wall. Patterned carpet is on the floor. An oval picture of a woman and a small girl in an ornate gilt frame is on the wall at the left. Fringed drapery is at the right. A large bouquet of flowers, including tulips, is in what appears to be a window opening at the far right.
