DescriptionThe United States Hotel, a large four-story building with louvered shutters, tall chimneys, a balustrade, and two American flags flying from flagpoles on the roof, is pictured on the right half of the card. Men and women enter the front door and stand on a covered balcony above. Others walk on the sidewalk in front of the hotel. Two horse-drawn vehicles, including a coach, are in the street nearby. Part of the lower story has shop windows and appears to be used for commercial purposes. Another commercial building is at the left. A small building at the right with two columns supporting a pediment over the door has a sign that reads: "HARTFORD NATL BANK". The left side of the card is printed with a map of downtown Hartford, showing the locations of the major streets and of Union Depot, the Connecticut Valley RR Depot, and the Steamboat Landing, in relation to the United States Hotel. The Connecticut River is at the far right.
