DescriptionA man with a beard and mustache lies on his back on the ground. His upper body rests on a rock, and his hands are evidently tied behind him. He wears a doublet, breeches, hose, and shoes with buckles. A young Native American woman wearing a fringed blanket, a necklace, and a band in her long hair bends over him. He is threatened by two other Native Americans wearing loincloths and feathers. Both men have tattoos. The man on the left holds a hatchet. The man on the right is swinging a club. A group of Native Americans on the left, apparently led by a woman wearing a feathered headdress and holding a long pipe in her hand, look on. Some are seated on what appears to be an animal skin. Wooden walls in the left and right background appear to be part of a fort or stockade. Smoke billows from a small fire in the distance. A hat with a plume, a quiver of arrows, a bow, and a hatchet are on the ground in the left foreground. A basket of corn is in the right foreground.
