DescriptionAn elderly man lies in bed, propped up on a large pillow. He wears a nightshirt and is covered with a sheet or blanket. His eyes are closed, and he appears to be dead or dying. Seven men stand behind the bed. Six wear coats, pants, vests, shirts, and neckties. The sixth is dressed in clerical vestments; he stands in the center, with an open book in his right hand. A woman kneels in front of him. A second woman and a girl kneel in the foreground. Both women wear black dresses. The woman in the foreground wears a bonnet as well. Her face and hands rest on the dying man's breast. The girl hides her face in the bedclothes. Fringed drapery with a tassel frames the scene at the left and right. Striped carpet is on the floor.
