DescriptionHalf-length view of a man with long hair, a mustache, and a beard seated at a long, narrow table covered with a tablecloth. He wears a heavy cloak over a long-sleeved robe. He is looking up, and a halo encircles his head. His right hand is raised, and he holds a small loaf of bread is in his left hand. A plate, a chalice or goblet, and a napkin are on the table.
NotesSource Note: The pictorial source is a painting by Carlo Dolci. An engraving of this painting by F. Kearny is in "The Cottage Bible and Family Expositor" (Hartford: Printed & Published by Case, Tiffany & Burnham, 1844) has the same title "Christ Blessing the Bread." However, there are minor differences in the treatment of the tablecloth and drapery, and it seems unlikely that this engraving was the intermediary. (Finlay 2/18/2004)
