DescriptionA woman is seated within the porch or cloister of a Gothic church. She wears a black dress with white undersleeves, collar, and cap. A small brooch is pinned at her neck. A small child, probably a girl, leans against her leg. The child wears a short black dress over pantalets. The woman holds the child's left hand in her right hand. A dog, probably a small greyhound or whippet, lies at their feet. The dog wears a collar. A grave monument, presumably of marble, is framed in an arched opening at the right. A carved urn is on top of a rectangular base, which is inscribed "IN / MEMORY OF". The side wall of the church with a projecting porch is in the left background. The church is constructed of dressed stone, with pointed arches, crockets, and finials. A rose bush in bloom grows on one of the columns of the porch. Weeping willows are in the churchyard in the background.
