DescriptionIn the left foreground, a young woman appears to have fallen on a grassy bank beside a stream. Her left foot is in the water, and her right hand rests on the bank. She holds a straw bonnet by its ribbon ties in her left hand. She wears a dress with a wide collar or bertha with a bow at the neck. A second young woman stands to the right of the stream, preparing to cross. She holds up the skirt of her dress with her right hand and also holds a veil attached to her bonnet. Reeds and leafy plants line the stream. A rail fence is in the right foreground. Two large trees are in the center, on the bank of the stream. In the right background, a bull charges a small dog. Two boys, both holding sticks, run after the bull. One wears a smock; the other wears a vest, shirt, breeches, and hose. A folding chair or stool and a book or sketchbook, which is open on the ground, are nearby. A house with a hip roof and an outbuilding, possibly a barn, with a thatched roof, are beyond a board fence. Additional trees are in the background.
