DescriptionAt a ball, in a side room, a young man greets an elderly man and a young woman. The young man wears a military uniform and carries a hat with a plume, a sword, and a pouch with many straps on it. The woman wears a dress with a wide neckline and a V-shaped waistline. The short sleeves and skirt are trimmed with tiers of lace. Her jewelry includes a brooch, matching bracelets, and a double stranded necklace. She is wearing gloves and holds a bouquet of flowers and a handkerchief in her right hand. Additional flowers are in her hair. She holds her left hand to her lips. The old man wears a frock coat, trousers, and a patterned vest. Around his neck, he wears a monocle on a thin cord or string. He adjusts his collar with his left hand and holds a top hat in his right hand. A lamp with a globe shade is on the mantle of a fireplace at the left. Patterned wallpaper is on the walls. A patterned rug is on the floor. Patterned drapes are drawn back to reveal a crowd of people in another room in the background. A chandelier with candles, two pictures in ornate frames, and the railing of a staircase are visible.
