DescriptionSlide photograph of Polish wood carver Wladyslaw Furtak at his home in Ansonia, Connecticut with CCHAP intern Marta Garbos.
NotesBiographical Note: Wladyslaw Furtak is a singer, storyteller, and woodcarver from the Gorale region in the Tatra Mountains of Poland who resides in Ansonia, Connecticut. He performed Gorale songs and stories at the opening of the exhibit “Polonia w Connecticut: Polish American Traditional Arts in Connecticut.” He also loaned several pieces carved and inscribed in Gorale style to the exhibit, including a baby’s crib used by his grandchildren; wooden utensils used for making cheese; and a frame with family pictures and the inscription: “Be great with God and people.”

Biographical Note: Marta Garbos served as translator and fieldwork assistant for the “Polonia w Connecticut: Polish American Traditional Arts in Connecticut” exhibit. She received a degree in community health at the University of Hartford. A native of Poland, she studied with CCHAP Director Lynne Williamson during spring semester 1999. Marta's skills in community outreach and Polish-English translation contributed a great deal to the exhibit project research.

Additional materials exist in the CCHAP archive for all these artists and their communities.
