DescriptionLandscape painting of Hebron, Connecticut and the Hebron Elm. Painted by Reuben Rowley in 1829.

An oil on canvas landscape view of Hebron, Connecticut featuring the Hebron Elm in the center, Town Street running into the distance, and the Providence Road in the foreground. To the left of the Elm is a large red brick Georgian home with a tavern sign out front, next to a white Federal home with a white picket fence in front and a flower garden in full bloom. A few houses follow into the distance looking towards a rising hill to the south. To the right of the Elm is a small white Federal home with a trade sign over the door and white picket fence out front, continuing to a gate in front of a large white gambrel roof colonial home with two large pine trees out front, continuing to a white Federal home with a red roof, a white hip roof Georgian home, continuing to the Governor's home [Gov. John S. Peters], a white Georgian with four chimneys adjacent to the Gothic Revival red brick with white spire St. Peters Church. The sky shows a deep blue with rolling clouds, softening into light pinks in the distance. The reverse is signed in script by the artist, "No. By R. Rowley." The landscape view is held in the original molded pine and gilt decorated frame, branded on the reverse by the artist, "R. Rowley, Limner, 1829." The landscape shows a view towards Colchester.
NotesArtist Note: Governor John S. Peters' Account Book Ledger D, page 181, includes an entry for "Reuben Rowley, Painter" from December 1828 through October 1829, showing payments totaling $75.00. The account was settled on October 10, 1829, showing the signature of both the Governor and the artist. This ledger can be found in the Connecticut Historical Society collection under Ms 102138.

Subject Note: According to Peters family tradition, this is the No. 1 version of this landscape, a second copy was located in the warly 20th century in Vermont before contact was lost.
