NotesSubject Note: Francis Joseph Spellman was an American prelate of the Catholic Church and the sixth Archbishop of New York. He became the Vicar General of the United States Armed forces in 1939. During his time as Vicar General, Spellman would travel oversees to visit United States service personnel. He would help mobilize American Catholics in support of the war effort. He remained Vicar General until his death in 1967.
