DescriptionPillbox-style Goveror's Foot Guard uniform cap. Primarily machine-stitched of scarlet fine wool broadcloth. The cap has a 1 1/2-inch-wide band of black, rib-woven, worsted wool braid tape. The tape has faded to a brownish grey. At the front of the band is a silver-embroidered monogram in script, "GFG". Just above the monogram is a silver-embroidered number "1". Attached on either side of the hat are silver buttons with "GFG" on the face in Old English script. The buttons are back marked "RIDABOCK & CO. N. Y." Attached to the buttons is a metallic silver twist cord with two braided silver slides; this is probably a chin strap, though it is fastened over the top of the cap. The cap has a sweatband of brown, painted cloth, in imitation of leather. The cap is lined with black cotton sateen. The crown lining is stamped with a 1 1/2 inch wide by two inch high oval maker's mark, consisting of a garter encircling a knight in armor (see Marks).
