DescriptionPainting of Dorothy House Samson (Mrs. William Henry Samson) and her son, William Henry Samson, Jr, attributed to Joseph Whiting Stock. Samson is wearing a green dress with a lace capelet tied at her throat with a green ribbon. Her dark hair is looped in braids in front of her ears and pulled back. In her right hand, she is holding a miniature that probably depicts her husband, Captain William Henry Samson. She has her left around around the shoulder of their son, William Henry Samson, Jr. He is about five years old. He is wearing a black or very dark blue jacket with a white collar and a black or dark blue bow tie.

The Samsons appear to be sitting at a table covered with a patterned cloth. A book is sitting on it. In the background, there is a glass cloche on a mantel. Next to it on the left, the corner of a gilt-framed painting is just visible under a red velvet curtain.
