DescriptionPortrait of James Nichols by artist Edwin Burrage Child. Nichols was painted when he was 80 years of age. He has white hair and a full, short beard (no mustache). He is seated in a Chippendale-style armchair. He is wearing a dark gray or black suit and vest and a white shirt with an upturned collar. Both of his arms are resting on the arms of the chair. A pair of gold-rimmed pince nez eyeglasses are looped over the index finger of his left hand.
