DescriptionPortrait, attributed to Sarah Pope, of Frederick A. Taft as a boy with a large black dog named Major (nameplate on his collar). The full-length painting shows Taft standing with his left knee bent and his foot resting on the dog, his left hand holding the dog's left ear. He holds a whip in his right hand. He is wearing a plaid dress with short sleeves and white cuffs, white pantaloons, white stockings, black shoes, a black belt with a gold buckle, and a white ruffled collar. There is a tree behind him and a landscape view in the distance.
NotesConstituent note: The signature of the artist was tentatively identified as S. Pope, which may be Sarah Pope, an entry for whom appears in The New-York Historical Society's Dictionary of Artists in America. That Sarah Pope may not be the same artist as the one who painted this portrait.
