DescriptionA young man and a young woman are seated on the grassy bank of a small stream. The man wears a jacket, vest, shirt, necktie, and trousers. He holds a long fishing pole in his right hand. A wicker basket or creel is beside his feet. His right arm rests on the woman's knee. She wears a dress with a striped bodice laced up the front. A rose is pinned to the center of the wide neckline. The sleeves are trimmed with ruffles and lace. She holds a tablet of paper, possibly a newspaper or sheet music, which she appears to be reading. Vines grow around a large stone urn on a pedestal behind her. A large tree at the left appears to be a willow. Two cows are beneath another tree in the field in the background. A church steeple and a second tower, possibly a second steeple, are visible behind a thick band of trees.
