DescriptionPillbox style forage cap of the 1st Company of the Governor's Foot Guard. Machine-stitched fine scarlet wool broadcloth with hand embroidery. The cap has a brown leather sweatband and a black silk lining. The sides of the cap are reinforced with a band of buckram, two inches high. The crown is lined with machine-quilted black silk, with wool or cotton batting for padding. A 1 1/2-inch-wide band of black worsted wool braid circles the sides of the cap. The center front is ornamented with a silver-embroidered wreath, within which is a two-line legend, consisting of an embroidered number "1" over the embroidered letters "GFG" in Old English script. The cap has what appears to be a chin strap made of two silver thread twist cords, fastened on the end with two small, silver-colored buttons, with "GFG" on the face in Old English Script. The buttons are back marked "RIDABOCK & CO. N.Y."

In terms of is styling, this cap is consistent with forage caps at the turn of the twentieth century. By its coloration and design, it is clearly associated with the Governor's Foot Guard.
