DescriptionMan's top coat of deep blue/black wool-plush with a hidden front, single-breasted closure. The notched lapel has a black velvet collar. The front closure has a placket on the proper left side into which the four keyhole buttonholes have been stitched, so that the buttons are hidden when the coat is closed. The buttons on the proper right are covered with a square pattern created by silk thread. A fifth, smaller button and corresponding hole is stitched by the neck to enable the coat to be buttoned up to the neck. The collar is made of black velvet. The coat is constructed with a center back seam with a vent and a back seam placed close to each side under the arm. The sleeves are made of two shaped pieces, with an attached, turned-back cuff, 2 1/4 inches wide. The ends of each cuff are rounded and joined across half the cuff's width. There are two welt pockets with flaps, one on each side front at the hip. These are lined with a tan cotton velvet and faced with black silk. The proper right pocket has a smaller pocket inside. A third pocket with an upturned flap is sewn at the proper left breast. This is lined with a black cotton fabric. Two other pockets are sewn into the lining; a double welt pocket lined with black cotton and faced with black silk is on each side at the breast. The coat is lined with a satin-woven silk. Several patches on each side under the arms and at the front suggest the lining may have been patched.
