DescriptionMan's cloak with capelet, made of heavy black wool, trimmed with a wide black tape. The front panels are lined with a panel of red velvet and a second panel of plaid silk with purple, red, and gray-white. The wool fabric is so closely processed that the hem is simply cut and not finished. The undercape is constructed of only two pieces of wool, with a center back seam vented at the hem, 13 1/2 inches long. The vent is trimmed with the flat black tape, machine-stitched on. The decorative tape is one inch wide, edged with a very narrow strip of close braid trim. These trims can be seen along all other edges, with the exception of the hem. The front closure has two single buttons at the neck. Each button is metal covered with decoratively woven black thread. The closing method appears to be a loop of narrow bias tape attached under each button. The fronts are faced with red velvet fabric, five inches wide at the neck and ten inches wide at the hem, and a second fabric of silk plaid (purple with red and grey-white plaid). This second piece is four inches wide at the top and 11 1/4 inches at the hem. The effect is very dramatic. The red velvet continues around the back of the neck as a facing. The capelet is lined with a wool and silk fabric lining, probably originally black (now green) and trimmed around the hem and front with the flat tape.
