DescriptionHalf-length portrait of a young woman. She is seated and wears a dress with puff sleeves decorated with bows and black lace. A necklace of pearls or beads is around her neck. Flowers, including a rose, are in her hair. A shawl, also trimmed with lace, is draped across her arms. The carved edge of the chair or sofa on which she sits is visible above her right shoulder. Her left hand rests on the handle of a basket, which rests on a table at the right. In her right hand, she holds one of the flowers that lie on the table beside the basket. Drapery with heavy fringe is in the left background. A town on a harbor and a sidewheel steamboat are visible through a diamond-paned window in the right background.
