DescriptionA young woman wears a dress with a wide neckline and with pleating or gathering from each shoulder to the center front. Leg-o'-mutton sleeves are also pleated or gathered at the shoulder seam. Extra triangles of fabric at the shoulders and armholes may be intended to imitate the effect of a front-opening coat. A wide belt is fastened with a large buckle. The upper edge of an undergarment, probably a chemise, is visible at the neckline. The woman's jewelry consists of drop earrings. She also wears a broad ribbon tied around her head in a large bow.

NotesArtist Note: The composition closely resembles that of "Ellen" and "Sarah", two D.W. Kellogg lithographs. "Ellen" (1957.65.49) was printed by Kellogg and published by Willis Thrall, the publisher of "Nancy". "Sarah" was both printed and published by D.W. Kellogg. Kellogg's role, if any, in the creation of "Nancy" is unclear. (Finlay 12/22/2003)On View
