DescriptionSeymour family coat of arms drawn by William Johnston. There is a red shield in the center with joined yellow wings within. Above the shield are a helmet and a torse (roll of yellow and red fabric above the helmet). There are decorative supporters on either side of the shield. Below the shield is the motto "Foy Pour Devior" (Faith For Duty), which is probably a misspelling of "Devoir." Below this is the text "He beareth Gules, a Pair of Wings Inverted and Conjoyn'd Or. by the name of SEYMOUR."
NotesDate note: From a document in the object file: "The Seymour coat-of-arms in water color, formerly owned by Thomas Seymour, first Mayor of the City of Hartford, was also purchased. At the time we thought that it could have been done by William Johnston in 1764 when he painted the portraits of Thomas Seymour and his wife, Mary Ledyard. This was proved in 1968 when The South Congregational Church of Hartford turned over to us a receipted bill by William Johnson, April 21, 1764, to Thomas Seymour, for two portraits and a coat-of-arms."
