DescriptionPortrait of Mary Hill Nichols by J[onathan] Budington after a work by Ralph Earl. Nichols is pictured seated, wearing a black dress with black lace on the bodice. A white garment, possibly a shawl, is wrapped around her neck. Her hair is covered with a white bonnet. There is a strand of yellow beads around her neck. Her hands are in her lap, and in them she holds a pair of eyeglasses. There is a slight smile on her face.
NotesConstituent note: This painting is after a work by Ralph Earl, who painted John and Mary Nichols in 1795. Earl painted Mary with her infant daughter, probably Charlotte, on her lap. Charlotte does not appear in this copy by Budington -- in 1802, Charlotte would have been a child of seven, not a baby.
