DescriptionFlyer, Mashpee Wampanoag Powwow.
NotesSubject Note: The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe, based in Mashpee and Taunton, Massachusetts, is one of several Wampanoag groups living in southeastern Massachusetts for centuries. The tribe gained recognition by the federal government in 2007 and survived a threat to their recognition status in 2019-2020. The tribe has an elected government and also traditional spiritual leadership from clan mothers, advisors, and a Medicine Man. A Wampanoag language reclamation project has been very successful in education for young Wampanoag students and for the group’s cultural sustenance. Plimoth Plantation has included a Wampanoag Village in its educational department; this initiative has been instrumental in revitalizing and presenting traditional Wampanoag cultural knowledge. Among its other cultural activities, Mashpee has held an annual homecoming powwow during July 4th weekend since 1922. Drum groups, Eastern and intertribal singing and dancing, veteran honoring, Mashpee princess, a fireball game, and traditional arts demonstrations and sales are features of this powwow. The centerpiece of the gathering is a traditional clambake, celebrating this longstanding traditional foodway.
