DescriptionProgram, World Championship of Singing and Dance, Schemitzun 1993.
NotesSubject Note: The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation based in southeastern Connecticut holds an intertribal powwow annually. Called Schemitzun, the gathering celebrates the seasonal abundance of Green Corn. Over the years this has taken place at different locations including the Hartford Civic Center in the early 1990s, and later at a variety of places on the reservation. These social gatherings feature traditional dance presentations and competitions, arts and crafts displays and sales by Native artists from all over the United States, and music presented by invited singers and drum groups from all across Native America. The annual powwow is managed by the Nation’s Cultural Resource Department and Foxwoods Casino. Public audiences attend this ticketed event.

This event in 1993 was notable for the number of drum groups participating - 50 - along with the quality and reputations of the dancers, the judges, the emcees and the music performers. This would have been one of the largest and most vibrant of the powwows happening in Native America.

Additional audio, video, and/or photographic materials exist in the archive relating to this event artists.
