DescriptionPortrait of an unidentified woman by an unknown artist, "in the manner of Sully" [presumably Thomas Sully, the portrait painter]. She is facing slightly to the left, and has a light complexion, gray eyes, and light brown hair which is combed smoothly back and almost hidden under the white tulle cap she is wearing. The cap is trimmed with ruches and is tied in a bow under the chin on the right side. She is wearing a tight-fitting black dress with off-shoulder decolletage and puffed sleeves, and a white embroidered muslin fichu fastened by a floral cameo brooch. A long gold chain falls from around her neck to below her waist. She is seated sideways in a reddish chair against a dark background.

NotesConstituent note: The Bates card description contains this statement in quotes (original source not noted): "painted "in the manner of Sully, found in the garret of an old house on Chapel Street, New Haven, once occupied by the Graduates Club.""
