DescriptionFull-length portrait of Katherine Louise Brained at the age of 24. Her body is turned in profile towards the left and her head is turned full faced. She is standing at the foot of a staircase as if preparing to ascend. She is wearing a dress with a garnet-colored fitted bodice that extends over the white skirt into a tiered, ruffled bustle and train. The three-quarter length sleeves and neckline are trimmed with white fabric and lace.
She has dark brown hair parted down the center and worn tightly on the top of her head in an arrangement of curls. She has heavy-lidded eyes. She is carrying a closed fan in her right hand and is holding her train in her left. She is wearing a gold bracelet on her left arm and a gold ring on her right finger.
The staircase she faces has a cascading flowering plant at the post, metal grillwork rails, and carpet-covered steps. The background is predominantly brown and suggests a panelled wood interior.
