DescriptionPortrait of James Bidwell Hosmer as an older man. He is sitting in a Flemish or Jacobean caned chair, turned slightly right. He is wearing a black suit with a white shirt with a high, stiff collar and black stock. His right hand holds a cane with an antler handle. His left hand rests on a manuscript, which is on a table covered with a red cloth, on which there are two books. At right is a diamond-paned window, through which is seen a landscape of trees, water, and the sky at sunset. The portrait was probably executed in the Connecticut Historical Society's room, as the window is similar to others in its rooms and the chair in which he is seated is in its possession.
