DescriptionPainting of the Charter Oak, depicting the tree after it fell, with the stump standing in the left portion of the painting and the top of the tree and its broken branches to the center and right portion of the painting. There is a white picket fence behind the tree.
In the foreground on the right side are three small figures, two women and one man, all with their backs to the viewer. They are looking at the tree. One of the women is closest to the tree; she wears a yellow shawl with a flower on the back. The man is wearing a long coat and a top hat, and the other woman is wearing a yellow hat, brown shawl, and blue dress.
There are many other people visible, most standing behind the white fence. A small girl in a pink dress is standing under the portion of the tree where it separated from the trunk. A man is standing somewhat to the left and behind her. A couple is standing to the left of the large stump. All of the figures are very small in comparison with the tree.
Beyond the trees in the background, the top portion of a white house with two chimneys is just visible. In the foreground is the title: "CHARTER-OAK."
