DescriptionSampler worked in cream, dark brown, and medium brown silk and wool threads on a plain-woven linen ground using cross stitches over two threads. The sampler is rectangular, oriented vertically. It is laid out with three rows of one alphabet, over an inscription and three rows of one alphabet, over the numbers 1 through 17 at the bottom. The inscription is "Lucia ann Loomis/ Sample Æ 11 years". There are several small diamonds. The lines of alphabets, text, and numbers are separated by various narrow borders, including straight and meandering lines. The sampler has a four-sided narrow border.

The sampler has a 1/8 inch double-turned hem on all four edges. The type of thread used changes at G in the second alphabet and continues through the end of the second alphabet and the numbers.

Letters and Numbers: There are two alphabets and the numbers 1-17. The letters are uppercase block in alphabet 1 and uppercase script in alphabet 2. The letters J and U are present in the first alphabet only. The second alphabet ends at T. All lowercase letters with descenders, such as the letter 'g', are placed so the descender does not extend below the baseline.

Stitches: The sampler is worked primarily in cross stitch over two threads; it also includes rice stitch.

NotesHistorical Note: Lucia Ann Loomis (b. 1846) was 11 years old when she made this sampler.
