DescriptionSummer spread in a Mariner's Compass pattern. The summer spread consists of a pieced and appliquéd top and a plain-woven white cotton backing. The summer spread uses red, yellow and blue printed plain-woven cotton, or calico, to make the design. The Mariner's Compass pattern consists of five multi-point stars that are appliquéd on a circle of white cotton and embellished with hand-stitched red yarn; these are then pieced into the summer spread top. Each compass has a fleur-de-lis at one point and a star at a point to the side. There is one compass in the center and one at each corner. The center of each side of the summer spread has an appliquéd anchor, and a pair of appliquéd flags or a pair of yellow stars. The summer spread has a pieced border consisting of red triangles. The top and backing are held together by a machine-stitched brown and white woven check binding at the all four edges.

Condition: The summer spread has scattered light and dark brown stains on the top and the backing.
