DescriptionSix cows are on a grassy knoll overlooking a body of water, possibly a lake. Three cows are standing; three are lying down. At the right, a man, presumably the cowherd, is seated on rock playing a musical instrument, possibly a flute or recorder. He wears a hat and smock. His staff rests on the rock. Two small children, a boy and a girl, stand nearby. The boy holds a spotted dog. Two additional herdsmen and a flock of sheep are on the hill at the left. Broad-leafed plants are in the foreground. Two trees are behind the cows. The towers of a city and two windmills are visible on the horizon in the distance.
